Prof. Bharat Shah

I am a Consultant Nephrologist with a strong academic foundation and a longstanding commitment to preventing kidney diseases, advancing kidney care, dialysis, transplantation, and the systems that support high-quality nephrology practice. My clinical training in nephrology spans leading institutions in India and the United States, including MBBS and postgraduate training from the University of Bombay, followed by DNB in Nephrology from National Board, Delhi. I further trained at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and New England Medical Center, Boston, where exposure to advanced renal care and transplantation shaped a structured, evidence-driven approach to nephrology. I believe outcomes in kidney disease depend a lot on clinical judgment and long-term planning. I currently serve as Director of the Institute of Renal Sciences at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, with a continued focus on complex nephrology, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. Academic medicine has remained central to my professional identity, with decades of experience in teaching and mentoring postgraduate trainees, ensuring that clinical practice remains disciplined, accountable, and grounded in evidence. Alongside academia, I remain actively engaged in clinical practice across multiple tertiary care hospitals, managing both routine and high-risk nephrology and transplant cases. This allows me to stay closely aligned with real-world clinical complexity while maintaining academic rigor. I am also the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Narmada Kidney Foundation, an initiative focused on kidney health awareness, patient support, and transplant advocacy. Building and sustaining this foundation has provided deeper insight into patient needs, public health engagement, and the broader responsibilities of nephrology beyond hospital settings. In parallel, I have been involved in research, publications, and national nephrology bodies, contributing to the development of nephrology, dialysis and transplant programs, clinical guidelines, and structured approaches to kidney disease management in India. My professional interests lie at the intersection of clinical nephrology, transplantation, medical education, and healthcare systems, with a focus on building patient-centered and sustainable models of care. I am open to academic collaborations, institutional leadership roles, and advisory opportunities—across India and international healthcare settings—where clinical expertise and system-level thinking can contribute meaningfully.
