Upon completion of foreign training in United Kingdom I returned to homeland with the expectation of helping patients heavily victimized by chronic kidney disease. Over the last five years I served as a renal physician in 4 different provinces in the country while playing the roles of a medical educator, clinical researcher. Currently I serve as the sole kidney specialist serving Uva province based at General Hospital, Badulla while supervising 5 satellite hospitals in Uva. Further, I voluntarily serve at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka(NHSL), Colombo and Air Force Hospital, Colombo with a special interest in expanding peritoneal dialysis. As novel initiatives, our devoted team were able initiate both live and deceased donor kidney transplants in Uva, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in Uva and at NHSL, Colombo . Moreover, I was instrumental in initiation of 6 satellite haemodialysis units in the country ( Kamburupitia, Tissamaharama, Diyathalawa, Wellawaya, Welimada and Katunayake) which provides haemodialysis care to over 350 needy patients. I am frequently invited to both national and local workshops and awareness programs as a resource person with the intention of uplifting knowledge and attitudes of both health care professional and public to strengthen their potential to combat against kidney disease. In keeping with these ventures I serve as the President of Uva Clinical Society, Secretary of Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology and as a member of National transplant advisory council, Sri Lanka. My research interests are CAPD, Critical care nephrology, Haemodialysis and glomerulopathies. I am hopeful that we can gratify many lives devastated by kidney disease via establishing multi-organ transplants, expanding CAPD services, initiating renal supportive care and augmenting CKD prevention programs resulting in a better Sri Lanka for tomorrow.
