Prof. Susan Crowley

I am a nephrologist, educator, and national leader dedicated to improving kidney health for Veterans and the broader community. I serve as Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and as the National Executive Director of the Kidney Medicine Program for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), where I lead national efforts to strengthen chronic kidney disease care, dialysis services, early detection, and patient education across the VA health system I have spent much of my career building programs that make kidney care more accessible, more equitable, and more patient centered. I have helped guide major national initiatives—ranging from telenephrology expansion to innovative clinical tools like the VA Dialysis Dashboard and VAREINS—that support better outcomes for Veterans living with kidney disease. My work reflects a longstanding commitment to improving the quality of care for individuals navigating complex and often lifechanging health challenges An active researcher throughout my career, I have contributed to more than 50 peer reviewed publications and have held leadership roles in numerous NIH and VA-funded clinical trials. My research spans kidney disease management, environmental and population health, health services research, and improving transitions in care for patients with advanced kidney disease. I serve on the Editorial Board of the American Society of Nephrology journals and regularly collaborates with national partners to advance kidney health policy and innovation. I have received multiple honors for my contributions to kidney medicine, including the National Kidney Foundation’s David M. Hume Award and recognition for my leadership in federal kidney health initiatives. I am also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of clinicians and scientists and continues to guide trainees and colleagues at Yale and across the VA. I received my MD from Albany Medical College, completed nephrology fellowships at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and earned my MBA with honors from the University of Connecticut. Throughout my career, I have focused on one mission: ensuring that people with kidney disease—especially our nation’s Veterans—receive the compassionate, highquality care they deserve.
