Prof. Peter Choi

I’m a clinical Nephrologist in Newcastle NSW; and the Director of Medical Services (DMS) of John Hunter Hospital; and the co-chair of the NSW ACI Renal Network. I love my roles and I love Newcastle. I am interested in finding, keeping and supporting the best people for the healthcare community of Newcastle and NSW. Life is tough across all the publicly funded health services in NSW and it has never been more important to acknowledge and deal with the problems we face, whilst seeking the strategic solutions we need to be able to move on. I originally trained in Medical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, UK and completed specialist training in General, Renal and Transplant Medicine at Hammersmith, Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals. I started consultant practice in 2003 as those great institutions merged to become Imperial College Healthcare. I loved working at Imperial, but after decades of miserable dark rain, my family and I moved to beautiful Newcastle, NSW. Along the way, I’ve been a basic science and translational researcher (immunology and genetics from a time you couldn’t imagine getting a sequence without years of work), medical training director, operational manager, strategic service planner and medicolegal consultant. I still am not, and never will be, any good at surfing. My interests are in finding new and better ways for doctors to contribute to patient care. That means leaving behind outdated, hubristic models of siloed medical care, whilst keeping our professional culture of vocation and apprenticeship despite working in a tick box world. Increasingly, it means focussed thinking about how we nurture and protect doctors training in a tough environment and how we keep our senior doctors from burning out.
