Dr. Paulo Fernandes

I am an experienced Nephrologist (with more than 10 years continuous experience after completion of specialty training) in a major European hospital, the largest in Portugal – Hospital de Santa Maria – in Lisbon, with exposure to, and proficiency at managing, all aspects of clinical and interventional Nephrology, at the hospital wards, emergency department, ICU and outpatient appointments. I also work, to this day (going on for 12 years now), at a satellite hemodialysis clinic, managing all aspects of the treatment of CKD patients undergoing dialysis. During my specialty training years, I also did an observership at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York (USA) and at Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris (France). I am a very patient-focused physician and very passionate about my work. Areas of expertise, skills and techniques : Clinical Nephrology, Hemodialysis (and Hemodiafiltration, SLED, CVVHDF), Plasmapheresis, Hemoperfusion, Peritoneal dialysis, Kidney transplant (medical assessment before the surgery and follow-up). Technical skills done autonomously – Placement of temporary hemodialysis catheters (ultrasound guided), placement (and removal) of tunneled hemodialysis catheters (ultrasound guided), percutaneous native and transplant kidney biopsy (ultrasound guided), abdominal fat pad biopsy (for amyloidosis diagnosis). I also assisted in percutaneous angiographic procedures of hemodialysis vascular access. Nephrologist at DIAVERUM – Unidade de Mem Martins/Sintra (satellite hemodialysis clinic), Sintra, Portugal, from 2010 up to the present day.
