Dr. Nasir Shah
Dr Nasir A. Shah is a renal physician and Conjoint Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences at UNSW Sydney. He is a Nephrology Staff Specialist at Prince of Wales Hospital and The Sutherland Hospital, a Research Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, and a regional scientific lead at Emerald Clinical Trials. His work spans clinical research, multi-centre clinical trials, and discovery science with a focus on improving outcomes for people living with chronic kidney disease.Clinical care & hospital-based research (Prince of Wales Hospital & The Sutherland Hospital)Dr Shah leads clinical kidney disease research grounded in day-to-day patient care. He manages chronic kidney disease across all stages and provides dialysis care, including haemodialysis.Clinical trials (The George Institute for Global Health)At The George Institute, he contributes to chronic kidney disease trials, supporting study set-up, follow-up, and data reporting. He works closely with investigators and trial teams globally.Discovery science & bioengineering (UNSW Sydney)At UNSW, his research connects kidney disease, vascular health, and cardiovascular risk. A key focus is dialysis arteriovenous fistulas and the biological effects of high blood flow—particularly how haemodynamic forces influence vascular endothelial cells. His lab develops patient-specific vascular models, including 3D-printed anatomically accurate vessels, to replicate real-world geometry and flow patterns observed in patients. This program bridges engineering and medicine through collaboration with physicians, surgeons, engineers, and laboratory scientists, linking patient anatomy to mechanistic models to study disease pathways and treatment response. His research training is supported by competitive scholarships and project funding.Teaching, mentorship & collaborationDr Shah teaches and mentors students at UNSW and has supervised projects across Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. He welcomes student projects and collaborations in kidney disease, dialysis access, vascular biology, and cardiovascular risk.
