Dr. Hugh Mccarthy

I am a clinical academic based in Sydney, combining my roles as a Paediatric Nephrologist at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. My clinical and research expertise focuses on genetic kidney disease, where I work at the intersection of genomics, clinical care, and clinical trial design.With over 20 years of experience in medicine, I have developed a strong track record in research leadership, education, and collaborative networks. I contribute to national initiatives such as KidGen and ANZSN, lead multi-centre trials, and supervise both MD and PhD students, supporting the next generation of clinician-scientists.I am passionate about integrating genomics into everyday clinical practice, improving access to genetic testing, and building frameworks that guide patient care and research. Alongside research, I take pride in my teaching, mentoring, and governance contributions, including leading the MD Research Block at Westmead Clinical School and delivering invited talks nationally and internationally.
