Prof. Ellen Hourn

As a dual qualified Consultant Nephrologist and Consultant General Medical Physician, Dr Hourn feels privileged to be able to combine her passions for holistic and patient-centered care with medical education and her commitment to lifelong learning. Dr Hourn creates a partnership with her patients and families, tailoring treatment plans to each individual’s needs and goals. She prides herself on her communication skills and enjoys collaboration with colleagues from other subspecialties, general practitioners and non-medical staff. She regularly participates in professional development programs through hospital education and peer review sessions as well as attending national and international conferences in both Nephrology and General Medicine. Dr Hourn has research interests in acute kidney injury and kidney transplant. She has always been motivated to improve her skills in order to better and more holistically care for her patients; she completed additional qualifications in the form of a Diploma in Palliative Medicine and a Masters in Perioperative Medicine to attain this goal. As a passionate educator, she relishes the opportunity to conduct bedside teaching and formal presentations for junior clinicians and nursing colleagues and is a qualified supervisor with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as well as a keen mentor of junior doctors and medical students. She co-founded a female doctor mentorship and support program at Robina Hospital. Dr Hourn’s non-clinical interests include environmental sustainability in healthcare, specifically Green Nephrology.
