Dr. Vaka Kristin Sigurjonsdottir

I’m a board-certified pediatric nephrologist and a Ph.D. with a clinical and research focus on pediatric kidney transplantation. My work sits at the intersection of immunology, HLA, and long-term transplant care, with a special interest in the children and young adults who face the highest medical and psychosocial risks. The adolescents and young adults who struggle the most with adherence, transition, and the emotional weight of chronic disease are the patients who drive my research questions. Much of my work looks at how we can use practical biomarkers to guide safer, more personalized immunosuppression. I’ve spent the last several years with an incredible group of collaborators on projects that connect real-world transplant medicine with rigorous translational science. I’m especially drawn to work that brings clinicians, HLA experts, and data teams together to make our care more thoughtful and more usable at the bedside. My goal is simple: to improve the long-term outcomes of the children and young adults who need us most, and to build evidence that genuinely supports clinicians in taking care of them.
