Dr. Peter Czarnecki

Dr. Czarnecki specializes in all types of genetic kidney disease, with a focus on Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), and ciliopathy syndromes. He is passionate about precision medicine approaches in rare kidney disease. His outpatient clinic is predominantly providing expert opinion and genetic differential diagnosis on newly discovered/undiagnosed cystic and other parenchymal kidney disease. Special interest areas are ADPKD, Polycystic liver disease (with and without kidney involvement), autosomal dominant tubulo-interstitial kidney disease (ADTKD), adult patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), congenital anomalies of kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT), nephronophthisis (NPHP) and NPHP-related syndromes, and all other types of pediatric and syndromic kidney disease in adulthood. The Czarnecki lab has received significant start-up funding from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), and has moved to the BIDMC Research North campus in July, 2022. Our research focus is on basic concepts of cell signaling through primary cilia, and the molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis in PKD and related ciliopathies. Our work involves CRISPR/Cas9-engineered cell lines to study cellular phenotypes of ciliopathy mutations, and we work with purified, recombinant ciliopathy proteins in quantitative biochemical assays, investigating altered enzymatic functions. Beyond our startup funding, the Czarnecki lab is supported by the NIDDK, by the PKD Research Resource Consortium and by Philanthropic support.
