Prof. Tom Nijenhuis

As an academic medical specialist and nephrologist-researcher, I am particularly interested in rare kidney disorders. In addition to trying to provide the best standard of care for all our patients, I have a specific interest in patients with rare renal tubular disorders. Fundamental research is focused at elucidating molecular mechanisms of renal disease, in particular kidney filter injury in rare glomerular diseases, which include deleterious intracellular pathways involving the calcium channel TRPC6. Ultimately, the goal is to identify molecular pathways that could serve as novel treatment targets. Clinical focus is on renal tubular disorders, which are often caused by dysfunction of renal tubular ion channels and transporters, that results in electrolyte and acid-base disorders. My efforts are aimed at improving diagnosis as well as identifying and implementing novel personalized treatment options to improve quality of life. Clinical and research efforts are embedded in the Radboudumc Expertise Center for Rare Kidney Disorders, the (Radboudumc/Erasmusmc) Center for Tubular Disorders and the Radboudumc research theme Kidney Disorders. Eventually, I hope we can translate results into new personalized treatment options that help reduce renal damage, prevent progression to end stage renal disease and improve quality of life of renal patients.
