Prof. Richard Smith
An experienced transplant physician and nephrologist with expertise in islet, kidney and pancreas transplantation and immune mediated kidney disease. Established the North Bristol beta cell replacement programme serving the South West and South Wales. In 2011 more patients were referred for beta cell replacement from the SW than any other region in the UK. Central to this success is a strong relationship with the Oxford Transplant Centre and my profile within diabetes and transplantation having served as Secretary and then President of the Artificial Insulin Delivery Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and as an NHSBT ODT Pancreas Advisory Group committee member I have considerable experience of undergraduate education having restructured the University of Bristol Medical School Junior Medicine and Surgery Unit, improving student feedback and ensuring compliance with Tomorrow’s Doctors. Central to this success was direct engagement with students and teachers as well as establishment of an online teaching platform specifically for the Junior Medicine and Surgery Unit. Voted Year 3 Teacher of the Year 2012. I have led a clinical research group since my appointment in Bristol becoming Richard Bright Renal Unit research lead and WCLRN Renal Specialty Group lead. Passion for all I do and excellence at engaging with people is central to these achievements.
