Our work is centered around personalizing care for individuals with chronic kidney disease, with a particular interest in disorders that lead to scarring in the kidney filter (called FSGS). Mutations in more than 200 genes have been found in chronic kidney disease and the list continues to grow. Despite advances in the understanding of the genetic causes of disease, there remain significant gaps in knowledge. Our laboratory focuses on developing next-generation sequencing based testing as a diagnostic and prognostic clinical tool, discovering novel genes and furthering mechanistic insight in clinically relevant genetic models of disease. Current research projects include: – Defining the genetic epidemiology of chronic kidney disease – Identifying new genes causing chronic kidney disease – Modeling genetic kidney disease in culture and in vivo for mechanistic based studies Our laboratory aims to translate research findings to help guide interpretation of genetic testing in the clinical setting to personalize the care of patients with chronic kidney disease in reaching diagnoses, avoiding toxic ineffectual therapies and selecting suitable at-risk kidney donors. We aim to identify new chronic kidney disease genes, which serves as a starting point for our mechanistic based studies to develop targeted therapies to halt or delay progression of disease.
