Prof. Marta Arias

I am a Nephrology specialist at the Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Service of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (HCB), with over fifteen years of experience in the management of advanced chronic kidney disease and haemodialysis. Throughout my career, I have been deeply engaged in projects aimed at improving the nutritional and hydration status of patients through the use of tools such as bioimpedance, always seeking to integrate innovation, quality, and patient-centred care. With a background as Quality Coordinator of the Nephrology and Urology Institute at HCB, my current work centres on education, research, and the integration of environmental sustainability into kidney care at both Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and the University of Barcelona. In recent years, my professional focus has evolved toward environmental sustainability in kidney care, particularly the implementation of greener dialysis practices — optimising water and energy use, reducing waste, and promoting circular models in healthcare. I recently completed a one-year fellowship at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) in the United Kingdom, where I collaborated with the Sustainable Kidney Care Network and several reference centres to develop, evaluate, and share sustainable practices across nephrology and urology. Today, I continue to advance this mission through research, education, and implementation projects that align clinical excellence with environmental responsibility — aiming to make sustainable kidney care the new standard of care.
