After training in Melbourne as a kidney specialist, since 1999 I have been working clinically in the Northern Territory: Darwin, Alice Springs, regional & remote community outreach. After a time as Director of NT Renal Services 2006-2010 I am now tackling bigger issues. How can we do better for disadvantaged populations, and why aren’t we? I have continued part-time clinical work since 2011, while pursuing research answering questions about kidney disease care disparities & outcomes among Indigenous Australians. My research using larger already existing datasets including some data linkage, tells us the system is not meeting the needs of all equitably. Some answers have emerged along the way but we aren’t there yet.
