Prof. Elia Reseghetti
Born as a diabetologist, trained as a nephrologist. Exploring the links between chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity. I started research in 2020, working on the artificial pancreas in type 1 diabetes. Soon after, I joined the nephrology residency at Bergamo Hospital – Mario Negri Institute (under Prof. Ruggenenti). Still with a strong focus on diabetology, I also gained experience with the „remission clinic” for proteinuric nephropathies and the treatment of podocytopathies with breakthrough drugs (e.g. obinutuzumab). I also worked as a clinical investigator, contributing to protocol design and several publications. In 2024, I joined Prof. Porrini’s research group (La Laguna University) to explore the role of physical activity in metabolic syndrome, and the pathophysiology of glomerular hyperfiltration and renal functional reserve in living kidney donors. Building on my experience with GFR measurement – the clearance of iohexol – I’m leading a project on the confounding effect of GFR estimation and/or normalization for body surface area in detecting weight-loss induced changes in kidney function. It’s a timely topic, considering the rise of anti-obesity medications and the need for accurate assessment of kidney outcomes. I will further develop my research through a PhD after my residency. I actively promote knowledge sharing and medical communication, managing the social media channels of the Milan University School of Nephrology and organizing journal clubs for residents (https://www.facebook.com/nefrologia.unimi).
