Prof. Benjamin Dekel
Prof. Benjamin Dekel is Chief of Pediatric Nephrology and founding Director of the Pediatric Stem Cell Research Institute at Sheba Medical Center, and holds the Klayman Chair of Nephro-Urology and Vice Dean for Research & Innovation at Tel Aviv University’s School of Medicine. His lab was among the first to isolate human nephron progenitor cells from fetal kidneys and to identify the cancer stem cells behind Wilms’ tumor, the most common pediatric kidney cancer. In 2025, his team grew the longest-surviving lab-grown human kidney organoid to date.

Good questions
Most Common Questions
Does Prof. Dekel see patients directly?
He’s Chief of Pediatric Nephrology at Sheba Medical Center, so yes, within that department — but this isn’t a private-booking practice. Referrals go through Sheba’s pediatric nephrology service.
What is his research actually about?
Growing kidney tissue from stem cells to understand — and eventually treat — kidney disease, and finding ways to target the cancer cells behind the most common childhood kidney cancer.
Can I book a consultation through KidneyGlobal?
Not directly. For clinical questions, contact goes through Sheba Medical Center’s Pediatric Nephrology department; for research collaboration, through his Tel Aviv University office.
